From Detroit 6V92 to FPT NEF 570 EVO
The owner of a classic Randell 41 vessel was experiencing the limitations of the original Detroit 6V92 marine engine, with oil in the sump, which led to an engine failure. A large, heavy, two-stroke powerhouse known for its distinctive noise and high fuel consumption. At 1,400kg fry weight and producing 435 horsepower at 2,300rpm, the engine occupied most of the engine bay, leaving minimal space to ‘wiggle’ around for servicing.
Fuel efficiency was also a major concern. A return trip from Perth to Rottnest Island and back consumed approximately 200 litres of fuel, making each journey costly and inefficient.
After assessing the vessel’s and owner’s needs, we at THT recommended the FPT NEF 570 EVO, renowned for its balance of efficiency, reliability, and modern technology. To retain the existing shaft, the engine was derated from 570 horsepower to 480 horsepower, offering a practical solution without compromising capability.
Key Improvements
- Weight Reduction
- The FPT marine engine weighs just 721kg, half the weight of the old Detroit 6V92, significantly improving the vessel’s balance and performance.
- Smaller Footprint
- With its compact dimensions, the new marine engine frees up valuable space in the engine bay, making it easier to access and service.
- Fuel Efficiency
- Perhaps the most noticeable improvement is fuel consumption. The FPT NEF 570 EVO marine engine now uses just 20 – 25L each way to Rottnest Island. Nearly a 50% reduction in fuel use. Over time, these savings will quickly contribute to offsetting the cost of the repower!
This repower project demonstrates how the right marine engine can transform a vessel. With modern technology, a lighter footprint, and exceptional fuel savings, the Randell 41 is now more efficient, serviceable, and ready for many more years of reliable cruising.
