THT recently completed a successful sea trial at Royal Perth Yacht Club in Fremantle. The project involved installing a new FPT Cursor 13 marine engine in a restored 45-foot timber hull vessel, originally the Fineline was an ex-crayfishing boat, with the goal of enhancing reliability, embracing the latest technology, and increasing horsepower.

Restored to its former glory, Fineline weighs 15 tonnes. The previous engine was a Volvo TAMD122P, producing 610HP at 2250rpm with a 12L displacement. This was replaced with the FPT Cursor 13, derated to 750HP at 2400rpm, weighing at 1400kg. The existing ZF 311A gearbox with a 2.1 ratio was retained, as well as the 3-inch 316 grade stainless shaft and the 32 1/4 by 28 3/4 full blade prop for a cost-effective repower. The vessel now cruises at 18 knots at 1800rpm, with an achieved max speed of 24 knots at 2400rpm.

Project Details

The new FPT Cursor 13 marine engine was selected for its superior performance and advanced technology. This engine features electronic unit injection and utilises two turbochargers, ensuring high efficiency and power delivery. The engine’s installation was seamlessly integrated into the vessel’s existing systems, including the retention of the ZF 311A gearbox and the 8-inch exhaust system from the previous Volvo engine for cost-effectiveness. Despite the FPT engine being marginally smaller, it delivered significantly higher horsepower (750HP compared to 610HP).

Outcomes and Benefits

The new engine provides a significant power boost, enhancing the vessel’s performance. The transition to a newer engine ensures more dependable operation, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. The FPT Cursor 13’s electronic unit injection and dual turbochargers represent a step up in marine engine technology. By utilising existing components like the gearbox and exhaust system, the project was completed efficiently and economically.
